Milwaukee and northern suburbs
I live in Grafton, 25 miles north of where I work in Milwaukee. We are a family of four in a 2000sqft home on less than half an acre with an SUV at about 21mpg and a coupe at about 31mpg (both highway). As of this writing it costs about $140/mo for gasoline, $220/mo gas & electric, $40/mo water/sewer, $2400/mo mortgage, $80/mo cable tv & internet, $40/mo home phone, $100/mo car insurance, $350/mo miscellaneous expenses (clothing, vehicle maintenance & licensing, etc.) and about $800/mo food. So that's roughly $4170/month before entertainment, gifts, emergencies, savings, out-of-pocket healthcare, etc.
We moved here from Newark, Delaware about four years ago. I'd say our cost of living went up about 10%. The extremely low taxes in Delaware were great and it was a really nice area to live and work in as the mid-atlantic/northeast generally goes.
