I pay 600GBP per month for my mortgage, which is much less than the cost to rent a 2 bedroom house with garage/gardens in the this (very nice) part of the city would be.
Gas/electricity are 65GBP per month
Groceries 30 GBP per week but I grow most of my own vegetables on my allotment
Eating out in a good restaurant with a decent bottle of wine is about 30GBP per person, with main course & dessert
A lot of pubs have shut recently because of the recession, but my local charges 3GBP for a pint of lager, which is quite a lot, & 5.60GBP for a large glass of non-house wine, which I think is also quite a lot
I cycle everywhere that I can, but do use the car about once a fortnight. Pertrol prices have come down quite a lot, but is still expensive, as is car servicing & tax/mot.
Car parking here is very, very expensive, with a full day costing over 15GBP
One really good thing about Cambridge is that Kettles Yard Museum & the Fitzwilliam Museum are still free to get into, & you can also look around a lot of the University colleges for nothing. There are 2 free festivals each year in the Summer - strawberry Fair, which is the biggest free festival in Europe & Pop in the Park, which is also free. Both events are family friendly
