Thumbs up Doha, Qatar

As at 2009 monthly costs
Rent: 1,300 USD for a large, unfurnished 2-Bed flat in a 4-flat apartment without garden (considered very cheap, though, by local standards)

Utilities: Electric and water 100USD
Broadband (600mbs) 60USD including landline rental.
National phone calls are free

Petrol 24 cents per litre

My wife cooks almost every meal from scratch at home: we almost never eat out. We spend 1,100 USD a month
11USD for a dozen eggs, celery 6USD per kg, wholegrain bread 3USD a kg, rump steak 10USD per kilo, ribeye steak 16USD, Local spring water 2.50 for 20 litres, fresh root ginger 70 cents a kilo, red capsicum 8USD a kilo,
A pint of beer (only available in public at certain hotel bars) 9USD
24 small cans of beer (only available from the country's one retailer, subject to your employer's permission to get a license) 1.8USD

DVD movie (recent) 30-40USD

Healthcare from employer (valued at 300USD per month for a couple)

Cars are cheap to buy and run by European standards, and getting by without one is tough - taxis cannot be relied on to be available, be on time etc.

Electronics and books are more expensive than Europe by about 20-30%

So, cost of living here is pretty high, but then, for most westerners salaries are pretty good - a teacher in the industrial sector takes home a basic of 4-5,000USD per month, depending on field of study, plus about 4,000 in benefits, not including bonuses (Which should include at least one month's basic per year). There's no income tax

Default Doha, Qatar

Accommodation paid as part of contract. Utilities cheap compared to UK , food was cheaper but now not much difference between here and UK.
Healthcare also included in contract packet.
Eating out used to be very cheap ( 2 yrs ago), now, getting close to UK prices.
Never buy eggs.

One of the still cheap expenses is take-away food, mostly free delivery, prices are considerably cheaper than UK, we get a good quality Indian/Chinese takeaway for about 6 pounds for the two of us, and there's usually so much we have plenty left over to go with jacket potatoes the next day.

Above info correct. However, I'm a teacher in Qatar and don't earn as much as poster above states - but more experienced teachers do earn that much. I'd say US$3000 would be a more reasonable average - some get less, others much more.

Internet is expensive here, and cable TV isn't cheap either. Another big expense I find is airfares. Flying with Qatar Airways from Doha is costly. To give you an example - you can fly Qatar Airways from London to the Far East (Bangkok, KL etc) return in economy for US$650, but the same flight from Doha is US$900 - US$1000 - doesn't make sense as you're flying half the distance. No budget airlines like Ryan Air or Air Asia, although you can get to Sharjah, Kuwait and Bahrain on no frills carriers. Not particularly useful...

Default Doha

4 bed villa QR10,000/ month, utilities extra low cost. Health care take out an insurance cost QR500/ year. Education very expensive, US or UK cost QR 30,000 per child per year. Eating out 4 persons drinking beer expect minimum QR1000. If no beer, eat cheap, QR 100 each is more than enough.
