Rent - 1,000euro for a 3 bedroom 2nd floor apartment in a relatively new apartment building with parking and gated security and a good management company. This should have been 1,300 but we managed to haggle. Prices are going down now though due to the recession.

Healthcare - 50-55euro for each visit to the doc. Disgraceful! I would have to be dying before I'd go to be checked out. A+E and ambulance charges all very expensive. Irish healthcare system is archaic. I know a woman who has gone to America twice to give birth to her 2girls, rather than have them here.

Transport - I live 5miles outside Cork City and spend 70euro on a monthly bus pass. My husband spends around 50euro a week on petrol, his job is about 20min drive away.

Eating out - a 3 course meal for 2 with a bottle of wine would typically be 80-100euro.

Drink - 5-6euro for a pint, 9euro for a cocktail.

Shopping - we do our shopping in Aldi because it is so much cheaper. We stock up for 2weeks worth of food for about 70-80, and buy bread and milk etc from our nearest shop. To do our 'big shop' in another supermarket would easily cost 150-200euro (for 2 people).

Utilities - our electricity and gas are from the same company, during the winter the bill comes to about 600, considerably less in the summer.
