Default Sar, hong kong

Rent: Depending on the location and type of housing. Average rent of a 500 sq. ft. flat in urban area would be about USD1,500 per month

Utilities: Hong Kong Island is more expensive than the rest of Hong Kong, as there are two electricity companies. In Kowloon/New Territories or the islands, it will be around USD100 to USD150 per month for a family of four, cost will be 1/3 higher in Hong Kong Island. Note that there are gas charges for cooking and hot water, there are also two major gas suppliers: Hong Kong & China Gas (coal gas) and Mobil (petroleum gas), average about USD30 per month for using petroleum gas but their network is not extensive, coal gas will cost almost double.

Food: Really it depends on how to eat, where you eat and the type of food. A combo at MacDonald's would cost about USD3, but a meal at the hotel will make you at least USD100 poorer. Cooking at home is economical, for a family of four, one oridinary meal will not cost more than USD15 for food cost. We no longer have tax on red wine, so one can enjoy a nice bottle of wine from all over the world for as low as USD8.

Healthcare is cheap, if you are a local resident. Government clinic (out-patient) is HKD45 per visit (about USD7), basic medication included. Hospital bed is HKD100 per day (about USD13), all inclusive. If you are a non-resident, it will cost far more than the basic. Better take up medical insurance. Major international insurers are represented here, including Blue-Cross, BUPA

Recreation: Movie ticket from USD5 to USD15, depending on the location and quality of the cinema. Classical entertainment (opera, musical, performances) are not very expensive, though not cheap at all. Billy Joel has just come to Hong Kong and the most expensive ticket costs over HKD1,000, the cheapest is HKD380 (about USD50).

Dozen Eggs: depending on the origin, cheapest from Mainland China, but could be contaminated, about USD2. Imported eggs are from Thailand, Malaysia, USA (cheaper, about USD4 per dozen), Japan and New Zealand (more expensive, can be over USD10 per dozen).

Default Hong Kong

Good information, but perhaps you can add thereally important stuff such as cost of housing (apartment and house (sq ft)), and cost of transports in terms of car rental/purchase, fule prices and cost of school fees.

This is more important and pertinent to people moving to HK rather than the price of eggs mate.

Cheers.
