Living on Maui
I lived in Kihei so my experience is limited to only the Island of Maui.
Rent- expect to pay around $700 a month for a room if living in Kihei.
I remember gas being slightly above average, especially in Hana.
Electricity can get pricey in the summer months because of Air conditioning. Expect to pay above $100 a month if you are running the A/C. All other utilities are the same as those on the mainland. Cell phone plans in Hawaii if you have a plan from the mainland because it is not considered roaming.
A gallon of milk has around $8.00, which was a big shock. Food in general is very expensive in Hawaii.
I expected Hawaii to be like California on island which I was VERY wrong about. The people in Hawaii are nothing like the people on the mainland. Hawaii is the most isolated landmass in the world. You have to be a special kind of person to one to live there. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, and like all beautiful things, it's easy to fall in love with.
Hawaii is unique because it truly is an "East meets West" experience. There is a HEAVY Asian influence. Expect to find a multitude of Asian cultures. Just like anyplace, there are jerks there that don't like outsiders. If you are smart you won't incorporate those people into your lives.
If you are moving to Hawaii, I say Aloha and have fun. Drink some POG for me.
