I'm not aware of Berkeley's costs but I'll try to help with Vancouver. And be aware that right now the USD is 10/8 over the CND and that can change quickly when the price of oil rises--the CND rises sometimes beyond par.
In east Vancouver you may be able to find a 2bdrm apt for $1100 per month. On the west side that would be more appropriate for a 1bdrm. The housing market is tight and likely won't change until after the 2010 Olympics--bring references you'll need them. I spend $110 per week on food not including alcohol and restaurants. A movie ia about 11 on a week night. Gas 90 cents per litre. Transit I think is about 2.50, depends how far you're going. A good cable package is about $60 per month, and I pay $150 per month for gas and hydro in a 3 bdrm place. My guess is that you will find housing costs high and all else comparable or a little lower. My quotes here are all CND.
Hope that helps.
