Thumbs up Mile-End Living

Montreal may be one of the most reasonably-priced urban cultural centres in North America... especially in the Mile-End neighbourhood which lies just north of Rue Mont-Royal between Ave de Parc and Rue St. Denis.

Rent: $470 - $500 CAD per month to share a 3 bedroom (much more common and reasonable than living alone in the city)

Utilities: ~$100/month (HydroQuebec, internet) per household, ~$200/month in the winter

Transportation: $2.75 metro/bus (but closer to $40/month unlimited student metro pass, $80/month for full-fare unlimited)
Extremely bike-friendly in warmer months -- Bike paths that run both N-S and E-W at several locations. Seriously more efficient getting around than the Metro.

Recreation: Average concert price: $10 - 20
Average meal price (per person): $12-14

Neighbourhood: Young, slightly hip. Hassidim population is concentrated here, but generally not obtrusive.

Residential Parking: $75/ sticker
