I've been thinking of relocating to a larger town. Is Vancover nice. I thought I might like to take the train down to Southern California when I retire.

rent: $800.00 for a large, older but well maintained one bedroom in the Mount Pleasant area
utilities: cable, internet and phone $100.00 bundled together through Shaw. Hydro is about $55.00 every 2 months

cell: $50.00

groceries: $200.00 - if I'm really broke I can get by on about $120.00 a month

car: gas is about $30 a tank - I use about 2 tanks a month. Insurance costs me about 120.00 a month, but that's low because I have the best discount available and an old car that's not worth much

restaurants and entertainment: about $11.00 for a movie anywhere from $10.00 at a cafe up

Rent: 700 per month with roommate... separate bedrooms and very spacious... just outside the city.

Utilities: 100 per month (heat and hot water included in rent)... so only phone, cable, wireless

Food: 200 per month I work in a restaurant... otherwise maybe more!

healthcare: free (when paid under 10,000 a year)

Recreation: :200 doesn't include drinks because I usually drink for free or really cheap!

To live in the city core of Vancouver very comfortably it costs around $10,000. cad for housing, food, entertainment, transportation (no vehicle).

This is an upscale apartment/condo (1,500 sq.ft penthouse) and lifestyle for a couple. There are many free activities and sites to enjoy as well as a variety of activities to fit any budget.

One of the major problems in the Vancouver area, is that wages tend to be low, for the most part minimum wage up towards 12$ an hour for the majority of employment. finding full time work with the majority of employers in this pay scale is also a hindrance.

there are other regions of canada, where not only can you buy a house for less than buying a condo in the suburbs, let alone downtown Vancouver, but you're making the same income there as you would here in the Vancouver area.

What's better, making 10-12$ an hour someplace where it costs you 150,000 minimum 1 hour's drive from downtown Vancouver for a condo, or being able to buy a 3 bedroom house under the same wages for the price of buying a mid to full sized vehicle?
