-rent US 200 for a one room in a poor neighborhood

-utilities US 50 for gas, water and light combined

-transportation US 100 for the month (public transit)

-food, somewhere between US 100-200 depending on whether I eat out or not

-entertainment, there are lots of free cultural events, and I have a student discount card, so I get half-price admission. Probably about US 50 per month goes to fun...

Cost of living:

rent : 10000 Rs for a house in zona sul, 500 m2 I am below market price
food: each week we buy 400 Rs of stuff in the local supermarket, standard chain, same price as large shopping such as carrefour, but kids eat at school for lunch, and we eat at the restaurant with my wife as well.

per week we also spend 600 reais including 2 way taxi (12 rs for a 15mn trip in city center), the rest is restaurant bills for lunch

Car prices are very high, recently checked an OPEL (chevrolet) corsa, 2008 model: 25000 rs
Health care: for a pediatrician around 450rs
