Newcastle, AUSTRALIA
Rent = AUD200 p/w for a one bedroom flat. I'm in the most expensive part of town.
Utilities = approx $900 p/a. That's just for electricity and gas - I have the heater on a lot!
Food = approx $80 p/w - I don't eat out much but I do spend cheese, exotic fruit and stuff. You could probably spend less if you are prepared to live on a tight budget and forgo fast food and restaurants BUT don't forget the 'cafe lifestyle' is pretty much obligatory here - and the cafe's aren't so cheap. Expect to pay $4-5 for a basic coffee. I have paid nearly $10 for a (admittedly huge) slice of flour-less chocolate cake.
A drinkable bottle of wine will cost you about $20 (you could easily find one for around $8 of your really not fussy). Good meat (steak and chicken breast) is expensive - around $30 a kilogram but you can get two cheap lamb chops for around $4 or 5.
Mobile Phone = $40 a month on a great plan. It actually equates to about $300 worth.
$110-120 for a box of 90 disposable contact lenses
$40 for a visit to the chiropractor
Transport is about $1.50 one-way (within Newcastle) with a student discount. Maybe double that without a discount - I'm not sure. You can pretty much walk to everything in the centre of Newcastle itself but a lot of things (shopping malls, events, the university, etc) are spread out around the suburbs.
A laundromat will charge about $4 a load (reasonably small machines) and $1 gives you seven minutes of drying time.
I suggest that AUD200 p/w not counting rent is about the minimum for getting by.
