Oh yeah, 39,000 would definitely get you by in Brooklyn, spend time researching where you want to live because rent is going to be the most expensive part of living in the big city. An affordable place within a decent range of where you are going to work will make living in New York much easier. It's really up to you, what is your standard of living where you are compared to where you are going. I know people who live off of 28,000 in Brooklyn, and they are loving life.
