Durban, South Africa
Live in town called Verulam - 30km from Ciry Centre.
Rent - NA (with parents) but Muncipal fees are a percentage of property value + utilities
Utilities - +- R1 500pm for 3 people
Transport: Own car - Petrol/Gas (+- 70km p/day) between R900 - R1600 depending on price of petrol (changes every month, was R11.22 in Oct/Nov, now R5.77 in Jan)
Food: Pool with parents. Monthly shop for 3 adults +-R2 500 - R3 000 including Milk, bread, meat, veggies, fruit, cereal and rice and spices, as well as detergents. Cheaper to buy veggies/fruit at market type places with better quality than supermarkets. We sometimes grow our own as the soil is good. Veggie prices vary greatly at different times of the year, Especially expensive in July/August.
Eating out at chain restaurant/pub: +- R150-R200pp for 2 courses + 2 drinks each + coffee/tea
Fast food: from R20pp-R80pp
Clothes: Depends where you shop - from R50 for a shirt/shorts upwards (average +-R180 for shirt at chainstore)
Medical: R150-R220 for doctor's consult without Med Aid,
The Municipal rates in Durban makes living here expensive, Food and fuel are a bit more affordable (if you know where to shop) that in Johannesburg, but are steadily rising, so it doesn't make too much of a difference as most salaries are lower here.
